This performance immediately drew the attention of Columbia Records' George Avakian, who was so impressed that he immediately offered Davis a contract if he could form a regular band. The group he then assembled would go down in history as Davis' so-called "First Great Quintet", consisting of John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass and of course Miles himself on trumpet. 'Round Midnight is Miles Davis' first record for Columbia and also the first studio recording of the First Great Quintet. The recording sessions began on October 26 1955 but the album wasn't released until 1957 as Davis was still under contract at Prestige at the time. These respective sessions yielded Steamin', Workin', Cookin' and Relaxin'; albums that would go down in history as quintessential blueprints of late 1950s hard bop. The record is made up of a collection of standards and one traditional song ("Dear Old Stockholm", from the 19th century). Notably, it features what may be considered the most well-known versions of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" and "Bye Bye Blackbird". That Avakian made a golden signing was sufficiently clear from the start, but no one could foresee that it would be this quintet on Columbia that would go on to change the course of modern jazz forever with Kind of Blue. 'Round Midnight is available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on crystal clear vinyl.

Tracks
1 'Round Midnight
2 Ah-Leu-Cha
3 All of You
4 Bye Bye Blackbird
5 Tadd's Delight
6 Dear Old Stockholm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1034/5778/3889/files/Miles_Davis_-__Round_Midnight_-_2026_Music_On_Vinyl_Reissue.jpg?v=1779329876
pre-order-tomasz-stanko-balladyna-luminessence-series-lp
Tomasz Stanko - Balladyna - Luminessence Series LP

Polish Trumpeter's 1976 Album on Vinyl LP
ECM Audiophile Vinyl Series: Luminessence

An essential document of European jazz in the 1970s, and a recording that still sounds magnificent today, Balladyna exerted an enduring influence on successive generations of improvising musicians – in Poland and Finland above all, though it also cast its spell more widely. On the record, the Polish trumpeter is joined by his close collaborator Edward Vesala on drums ('We were like brothers,' Stanko later said), saxophonist Tomasz Szukalski and master bassist Dave Holland, brought to the session by Manfred Eicher. Even though it was only the trumpeter's debut for the label, it presented Stanko's unique melodic voice in an already fleshed-out framework, with his earlier freer influences still looming in the band's explosive undercurrent. Already established in Brazil through songs such as "Samba de Verao" ("Summer Samba"), Valle worked here with producer Creed Taylor on a recording that pairs Brazilian rhythmic forms with contemporary American studio orchestration. The sessions include vocals by Anamaria Valle and arrangements by Eumir Deodato. The repertoire features English-language versions of compositions co-written by Valle, including "So Nice (Summer Samba)," "Chup Chup, I Got Away," and "Safely In Your Arms," alongside additional material that reflects his economical writing and feather-light rhythmic approach. Return To Forever is often cited as one of the core groups of the jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s. The final album by the longest-lasting "classic" lineup of the group (which consisted of Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Al DiMeola) was Romantic Warrior, on which they continued their experiments in the realms of jazz-rock and related music genres, and was lauded by critics for both the technically demanding style of it's compositions as well as for it's accomplished musicianship. The album is more avant-garde and less funky than the band's previous album, No Mystery. As one of the Netherlands' most famous saxophonists and the daughter of Hans Dulfer, Candy needs no introduction. The self-taught musician started playing at age six and made her first recordings already in 1981, at 11 years old. In 1990 she released her hit album Saxuality (selling more than a million copies worldwide) for which she received a Grammy nomination, and followed this record up with Sax-a-Go-Go in 1993. This is the follow-up to Big Girl, and is a continuation of the funk, R&B, and dance path she started following. But make no mistake: Candy's blowing is as fierce, gritty, direct as ever, providing a striking juxtaposition. Like on Big Girl, Dutch vocal mainstays Trijntje Oosterhuis and Berget Lewis are featured again. As in "the best of both worlds," where one undoubtedly wants to have everything but also offer the best of each universe. Both Worlds, a new step for Michel Petrucciani, or how to juxtapose distinct (id)entities and bring together the best of reciprocal elements, for the duration of a tour, a record, a wide-scale project. Dualism, then, but also balance. Geographical, from Paris to New York, and cultural, with three European musicians and three Americans. Both Worlds is clearly the testimony of the fruitful encounter between two worlds, between a composer and an arranger; the collaboration of two creative spaces that are dissimilar yet compatible. For the first time in his career, Michel Petrucciani entrusted his most accomplished compositions to another tailor of jazz and poet of made-to-measure, Bob Brookmeyer. The result is a magical undertaking, retaining that particularly distinctive "two worlds" character in the pianist's work: a writing imbued with classics and standards, over one of the most modern rhythm sections. Joy, melancholy, humor and moods, this recording displays a rich emotional palette and a few nods to Rodgers & Hart (Petite Louise), Return to Forever (35 Seconds of Music and More), Maurice Chevalier (On Top of the Roof) and Hollywood musicals (Chloé Meets Gershwin referring to A Foggy Day and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers by Johnny Mercer). Within an abundant discography, Both Worlds innovates and profiles the pianist's work in a new light. For the first time as well, Michel Petrucciani assembles a genuine group and builds a homogeneous formation where his presence and role are no longer perceived as dominant elements. While in many of his previous records the piano seemed to leap out of the rhythm section for an obvious highlighting, Both Worlds deliberately inserts Petrucciani within the group, and makes the pianist an integrated element of the whole, allowing him to be the leader without acting like one. Another novelty: Michel Petrucciani uses the horns here as never before; they no longer intervene only as soloists but in a new context, as accompaniment and counterpoint. If this record could only come to life thanks to an intense collaboration between composer and arranger, the unexpected production work of drummer Steve Gadd surely contributed to it's creation. Thanks to his experience in the most diverse contexts and to a solid friendship with Michel Petrucciani, he was able to provide knowledgeable suggestions and above all appropriate structural ideas. Both Worlds like the two flat faces of the same coin, the work of a Michel Petrucciani thus doubly generous and in a language that is as simply universal as possible. Among it's remarkable distinctions, it manages to draw on Wilson's schizoid experience having been a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the first drummer for the Art Ensemble of Chicago, in making an 11/8 rhythm into a staggeringly funky thing of joy. Over the course of fourteen and a half minutes, Hemphill builds a nearly continuous solo, his spiritual blood brother Wadud sawing the cello with a deep blues soulfulness that is raw and mantra-like in it's repetitive incantation. It feels right and wrong in equal measure, the theme carrying it's own piquancy with honked barnyard dissonances and some contrary motion between the horns and string. Laurindo Almeida Quartet Featuring Bud Shank was a groundbreaking recording, blending American jazz with Brazilian samba for the first time, years before the advent of bossa nova. Almeida and Shank enjoyed such early success with the record that they reunited five years later for their second collaboration, Holiday in Brazil (alternatively titled Brazilliance, Vol. 2).

Whereas Brazilliance, Vol. 1 was led by Almeida and focused on the traditional Brazilian influences, Vol. 2 allowed Shank room to contribute more of his signature silky soloing and energetic motifs. The vibe is almost as relaxed, but bristles with an adventurous energy and swing that serves Almeida's arrangements and solid guitar accompaniment perfectly. The session is immeasurably enhanced by the adept chops of bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Chuck Flores, while Dayton "Bones" Howe's warm and detailed recording brings forth every nuance of this inspired date.

Shank and Almeida's harmonious collaborations continued into the 1970s, forming the famed L.A. jazz group The LA4 with icons Ray Brown and Chuck Flores (later replaced by Shelly Manne, then Jeff Hamilton).
